What is Affiliate Marketing?
Affiliate marketing is when an individual (you) earns a commission by promoting someone else’s product or service. As an affiliate, you’re partnering with a merchant by joining their affiliate program and promoting their product on your blog, YouTube channel, podcast or social media accounts. When a someone clicks on your unique affiliate link and makes a purchase, you’ll earn a percentage of the sale.
If you’re like any of the bloggers I know… the purpose of joining an affiliate program is to get financially compensated for the content you already want to write on your blog anyway. Affiliate programs are one of the best (and easiest) ways to start making money from your blog regardless of how many readers you have today.
For those of you that may think it’s too competitive to launch a blog today, here’s a powerful statistic… it’s widely reported that affiliate marketing reached $6.8 billion in recent years. So, even if you’re brand new to blogging, carving out your niche in the market—and joining the right affiliate programs can still be incredibly lucrative toward your blogging goals.
Choosing which affiliate programs are best as a blogger can be a tricky part of your overall blog strategy, however. Especially if you’re doing this for the first time.
With literally thousands of affiliate programs available—and more being added to emerging verticals every day—it can get difficult to hone in on the best options for you. In this roundup, I’m shining a light on a small sampling of what’s out there… only the best of the best affiliate programs for bloggers to join right away. Check out my guides on how much bloggers can make & how long it takes to make money blogging.
Now quickly before we dive into this list, let’s cover a couple of the most common questions I field from readers about affiliate marketing from new bloggers:
What is an affiliate program?
An affiliate program is an arrangement by which a company (online merchant) selling a product, tool or service—agrees to pay their affiliates (you) a commission for any sales your blog generates of their products or services.
For the company who manages the affiliate program, they’re incentivizing you (with commission payouts) to send them referral traffic. It’s one of the easiest ways for brands to attract new customers, because they’re tapping into blogs (like yours) where their target audience already exists online. The process works by placing an affiliate link on your blog, which leads anyone who clicks on it straight to the merchant’s website.
The agreements of affiliate programs often vary greatly—some offer a commission to the affiliate only after a customer completes a sale, while other affiliate programs offer a commission for just getting a visitor to sign up for a free trial of their product—whether or not they end up becoming a fully paid customer.
There’s also a vast difference when it comes to commission rates too, which is why you need to do your homework and consider many factors before you make the choice to go with a particular affiliate program. That’s a major reason why I compiled this list of the best affiliate programs for bloggers to get started with today.
You can learn even more about how affiliate marketing works in my two deep-dive explainers about affiliate marketing in general and on Amazon more specifically.
In short though, there are three main types of rewards in affiliate marketing:
- Free Product: With product-based affiliate marketing, when you promote a brand’s products, you’ll get free samples, credits or plan upgrades in exchange for referring new customers to the company. While this can sometimes be a win, it’s not the best way to make money blogging, so we don’t have any of those programs included on this list.
- Commission: Most affiliate programs will compensate you for each time a new customer signs up for a company’s product, tool or service via your affiliate link, granting you a one-time fixed commission payout (sometimes based on the value of which plan or product the customer purchased), which incentivizes you to really promote your blog content and bring in more readers.
- Percentage of Sale: This is by far, the most common type of affiliate marketing, mainly because it’s considered to be more worthwhile. Under this agreement, you will receive a percentage of the sales whenever someone clicks on the affiliate link on your blog/website and purchases the product or service being offered on the other side.
How do you join an affiliate program?
When it comes to joining an affiliate program, bloggers often have two choices: self-hosted programs and those programs that are available on major affiliate networks.
A self-hosted affiliate program runs on the company’s own website, using either internally built or white-labeled affiliate software. All you have to do is a quick Google search of “brand + affiliate program” and you’ll find a link to more information about their affiliate program:
Alternatively, many brands choose to host their affiliate programs inside of larger affiliate networks, like Share-A-Sale or ClickBank. These massive affiliate network platforms allow you to find and join multitudes of new affiliate programs in different verticals, view commission rates and track reports all under one roof.
That being said, these networks can sometimes be restricted a bit in terms of options and commission payouts, which is why you should always first check if a company hosts their affiliate program through their own website first (where commission rates will be highest). Regardless of which route you take, some programs will add you automatically once you’ve reached certain benchmarks, while others accept anyone who applies to promote their products.
All bloggers need in order to join an affiliate program, is a website—which I’m guessing you already have if you’re a blogger—and a way to receive payments. The most common way to be paid out by an affiliate program is through PayPal, via direct deposit or even by Venmo.
I’d also recommend getting yourself a dedicated email address that’ll be connected to your domain, which will make you more legitimate in the eyes of the companies you’ll (soon) be applying to promote. Make sure your blog also has an SSL certificate, so that all connections to your website will be secure (HTTPS) for your readers—because most companies want to know their affiliates take their blog security seriously.
What is a cookie? What does web cookie duration mean?
Web cookies (also called HTTP cookies, Internet cookies, browser cookies, or just… cookies) are small blocks of data that get stored on your web browser when you’re browsing a website.
More specific to affiliate programs, third-party tracking cookies are the foundation for how your affiliate referrals are tracked and attributed, as tracking cookies are the most common way to compile records of browsing history. When someone clicks on your (coded) affiliate link and heads to a partner’s website, that special link will apply a tracking cookie to the person’s web browser—and log them as a referral from you.
Cookie duration refers to how long into the future you’ll receive credit for a referral when someone clicks on an affiliate link of yours. For example, if someone who clicks on your affiliate link doesn’t make a purchase right away, the company’s website has already applied a cookie to their browser (that packet of stored tracking information), so that they’ll recognize the person whenever they come back to their website. And if their affiliate program specifies a 30-day cookie window (most common), then you’ll still receive credit for the referral if they return and make a purchase within 30 days of initially clicking on your affiliate tracking link.
If you haven’t gotten your blog off the ground yet, and want to get things started with an eye toward early revenue—head over to my ultimate guide to starting a blog.

The Best eCommerce Marketplace Affiliate Programs for Bloggers
Kicking off this list are the affiliate programs from three of the world’s most visited online eCommerce shopping websites (where most of your readers will already be conditioned to make purchase from).
1. Amazon Associates
Niche: eCommerce
Who hasn’t heard of Amazon? This platform is a giant in the eCommerce world and its popularity continues to grow. So, if you ever talk about products that could potentially be for sale somewhere on Amazon, then it makes sense for you to join Amazon Associates to begin collecting (small) commissions on the products people purchase after following your Amazon affiliate links.
Here’s a quick breakdown of the commission rates Amazon currently offers on their main product categories:
You can learn more about Amazon’s Fixed Standard Program fee rates in their extensive fee guide.
Commission Rate: Varies between 1.0% and 10.0% depending on the product category.
Payment Method: Direct bank deposit, Amazon gift card or check (check processing fee: $15)
Payout Model: Amazon operates a volume-based advertising fee structure. The more products that are shipped as a result of your affiliate links, the more you’ll make per sale, which incentivizes bloggers to refer more and more customers over time.
Customer Support: Yes
Market Reputation: Excellent
Nature of Commission: Amazon triggers payouts only after your affiliate sales reach a minimum threshold of $10.
Cookie Life: 24 hours (90 days if a referral adds a product to their shopping cart during a session you refer)
Ease of Use: Amazon offers a walkthrough for beginners. There are also many online guides available.
Read through my guide to earning $1,000/mo on the side from the Amazon Affiliate program for even more on how to be successful with their program. And if you want a couple of real-world blog examples in niches that are earning from the Amazon Affiliate program, check out both Awesome Stuff to Buy and Red Birdie Golf.
Pros:
- Easy sign-up
- Access to nearly unlimited products you can promote
- Payments can be made by direct bank deposit, Amazon gift card or check
Cons:
- Low commission structure that makes it challenging to earn significant payouts without sending a high volume of traffic their way
- Affiliates only have a 24-hour window to earn a commission after someone clicks on their affiliate link
2. Etsy
There’s a good chance that you’ve already heard of Etsy—an online marketplace for crafters, artisans, makers, and thrifters. Since 2012, there have been over 2 million active sellers on Etsy and many millions of products listed.
You may not know that Etsy also has an affiliate program that bloggers in the right profitable niches can use to generate some extra income.
Niche: eCommerce (Online Marketplace)
Commission Rate: Etsy isn’t forthright with their commission rates on their affiliate sign-up page. Based on third-party reviews though, they’re typically between 4% and 8% for qualifying sales.
Payment Method: Check or direct deposit
Payout Model: Commissions are paid on qualifying sales (excludes cancellations or returns). Payments are made monthly or bi-monthly.
Customer Support: Yes
Market Reputation: Excellent
Cookie Life: 30 days
Ease of Use: Affiliates can contact selleraffiliate(at)etsy(dot)com for support questions
Pros:
- Variety of banners and ads available as well as curated page
- Any sales made during the 30-day cookie period are attributed to the affiliate — not just an initial sale
- Referrals work internationally
Cons:
- No guarantee of approval—applicants are “evaluated based on criteria such as type of site, site quality, site content, variety of site content and items promoted, brand identity, and alignment with Etsy’s values.”
- $5 sign up fee that is refunded after your first payment from the program
- Naturally, Etsy sellers can’t earn an affiliate income on their own products. However, they also can’t earn an affiliate income on products similar to their own products (odd).
- Low percentage of sales for their payout compared to many other affiliate programs
3. Skimlinks
Niche: eCommerce
Skimlinks is an affiliate marketing platform for publishers, that enables publishers to automatically monetize product links in commerce-related content. Skimlinks powers 60,000 bloggers and many of the top publishers in the world, including as Conde Nast, Hearst, and Huffington Post.
After signing up and getting approved by Skimlinks, you can earn commissions from up to 48,500 affiliate programs globally.
Skimlinks also has a range of great tools and resources to help you grow your affiliate revenue, such as the Editor Toolbar to automatically know the commission rate you’ll get from a site you’re visiting, as well as multiple performance reports to track and optimize your results.
Commission Rate: Depends on the merchants, they can range from 1% to up to 80%+. Skimlinks also negotiate with merchants higher rates for their publishers. For example, to become a Preferred Partner, merchants must increase their rate by at least 50%.
Payment Method: For publishers in the US, EU, or in the UK, Skimlinks offers payment by Bank transfer or PayPal. For publishers located in other regions, Skimlinks offers payment by PayPal only.
Payout Model: Skimlinks makes monthly payments to publishers, and works on a revenue share model. The split is 75/25 – which means publishers get paid 75% of the commissions earned. So if a merchant is offering 10% commission and you generate a sale worth $100.00, you will receive $7.50 and Skimlinks will keep $2.50. The amount of time it takes for a commission to be confirmed and paid varies per merchant but it will be at least 92 days from the transaction date.
Customer Support: Yes
Market Reputation: Excellent
Nature of Commission: Skimlinks triggers payouts once your affiliate commissions reach the minimum threshold of $65.
Cookie Life: Typically 30 days but they vary according to each Merchant’s terms.
Ease of Use: Skimlinks has many resources on their site including a Getting Started guide for Publishers and a Publisher FAQ. You can also watch this 90 seconds video to quickly understand how Slimlinks works.
Pros:
- Free to join
- Easy setup
- Time saver
- You will never forget or miss a link
- Many performance reports and tools designed to help publishers earn more
Cons
- When signing up, you are not guaranteed approval as Skimlinks only approves Publishers with good quality commerce content
Skimlinks payments are sent out to publishers only after reaching the minimum threshold of $65. Learn more about Skimlinks’ payment schedule here.
