  2. I agree with lots of comments on the idea that this isn’t exactly ‘from scratch.’ I’d love to know how you decided to learn the nuances and content area of direct response copywriting, how long it took, and what content area you’d recommend someone ‘starting from scratch’ to pursue.

  5. Hi Robert! Thanks so much for sharing your journey with us! Like you, I’m experienced in my field and have a couple of core focus areas/specialties, so while I’m starting my freelance business from scratch, I’m not starting my career path (e-commerce marketing strategy) from scratch.

    I’d love to hear more about how you identified the 12 prospects for your initial outreach, as it sounds like it was a mix of responding to posts from SolidGigs (and your logic in finding the right opportunities here made sense) and cold emailing (this is where I’d love to better understand how you identified prospects).

    For folks who are truly starting from scratch and are looking for ways to build experience, pro bono work for non-profits can be a great way to build your portfolio (I’ve hired folks whose portfolios are limited to pro bono work). It’s definitely an investment of time that you could be spending on pitching/business development, but if you’re finding that lack of experience is a roadblock, this could be a worthwhile option.

    I liked your tip to split pitching to an hour twice a day. That makes pitching more manageable for me. I’ve scheduled in my own blocks for pitching. I look forward to seeing how this helps me to get more pitching done. It has certainly made pitching less daunting.

    I’m not looking for recommendations to use Upwork. I’ve tried that unsuccessfully and so far it’s been a waste of time. I need guidance on finding clients off Upwork.
    Also, how much are you cold pitching or are you only sending pitches to those you know are looking for work?

  10. Hi Robert. Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it. You mentioned that someone going the freelance route needs to understand the trends in their hopefully soon-to-be expertise area. How would you go about doing that? If you’re not an expert yet, where would you go to learn the *true* trends without spinning your wheels? Likewise, it would be great to see one of these samples you’ve mocked up in google docs (if indeed you’ve used that instead of previous work). Would you mind sharing? Thanks again.

  11. Moral of the story when it comes to finding clients: QUALITY OVER QUANTITY.

    A good potential client:
    – knows they need something done
    – is looking to hire someone to help
    – has a budget in place for what they need done

    If someone doesn’t meet these requirements, then you’re probably just wasting your time by emailing them because you first have to convince them they need something and that they should hire you to do it with a non-existent budget.

    (To be clear, that’s what I learned from the Week 2 update. Writing in this style helps me process what I learned and prepares me to put it into action… Since I’ve been spinning my wheels chasing everybody down, I’ve wasted so much time. Now I know what I need to do!)

I really love this challenge..It has greatly inspired me.. although m not familiar with freelancing, the challenge has fueled me to start on my writing passion, which is short stories and poetry. And already 3 people love my first poem which i was not sure it was good. And 1 has challenged me to write 2 or 3 of which he wants to use in his literature lessons for his students!!!
